The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has officially launched the National Research and Innovation Fund (NRIF) headquarters on Tuesday, March 8, 2026.
The launch signifies the NRIF’s transition from a statutory establishment to full operational status, reinforcing its commitment to promoting research, innovation, and knowledge-driven development throughout The Gambia.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Hon. Prof. Pierre Gomez, emphasized that the establishment of the NRIF Secretariat is a crucial step toward fostering a knowledge-driven economy.
He noted that the Fund will act as a national mechanism to finance research, innovation, and technological development aimed at addressing key national challenges.
The NRIF is aligned with the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (2023–2027) and will support research and innovation in priority sectors including agriculture, climate resilience, health systems, digital transformation, and youth development.
Through its funding programs, the NRIF will provide grants to universities, research institutions, and innovators to support projects ranging from early-stage research to prototype development and commercialization.
Hon. Prof. Pierre Gomez also pointed out that the NRIF will play a central role in the upcoming National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (NSTIP 2027–2035), which aims to strengthen The Gambia’s science and innovation ecosystem.
MoHERST reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusive participation in the Fund’s operations while also expanding opportunities for young researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs across the country.
The inauguration officially marks the beginning of the NRIF Secretariat’s operations as a national platform dedicated to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable development in The Gambia.
The event brought together government officials, academics, and researchers, reflecting a national commitment to fostering a robust science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.
With its operational launch, the Ministry announced that the NRIF is expected to enhance funding, coordination, and support for research initiatives nationwide.
